Getting it Right in 2011 by V. Lyn
Spring is coming! I know it…even if most of the country is covered by snow, ice, rain and dead birds that fall from the sky by the thousands…that is a whole other story. But spring is coming and it is time for those of us who have let some things go..the ten extra pounds we put on during hibernation. After all this African American is Sub Saharan and I do not do well in the winter, for me it is a time to pack on that extra 5 pounds okay 10 pounds, let’s keep it real, for when the great blizzard sweeps across the great Southwest burying us in 20 inches of snow while winds whip about the plains in skin cracking gust of 60mphs, okay that has never happened here as far back as I could research but each year I still prepare for that inevitable day chowing down on all those sugar rich and processed foods swaddling my normally muscular body in a nice comforting layer of fat. My skin is dull and dry even the skin on my feet from the blistering cold , my hair dry and fried and my makeup even needs refreshing. Yes I sound like a mess but beneath the mess is a fox I can assure you. And perhaps you like me need a bit of nurturing and a gentle nudge in the right direction. so here are some great tips from a variety of experts.
Hot Hairstyles for 2011

For those beauty sisters who like to work a natural here are some fabulous styles for you… Remember curly hair needs more care as the hair is delicate. photos from thirsty roots.com and Essence.com
Now for the skin, drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated, eat plenty of rich colorful fruits and vegetables as they are rich in anti oxidants and new scientific findings show that the consumption of 8 servings of fruits and vegetables will diminish your risk of heart disease by 25%. 3ounces of fruit is equal to 1 serving so it is not as hard to meet the 8 serving goal as you may think. And for us who need to lose that extra weight gain we packed on the richness of fiber often found in fruits and vegetables will make us feel fuller and satisfied.
Exfoliate ladies and gents as the process of exfoliating sloughs off those pore clogging dead skin cells that exacerbates white heads, acne and black heads. It also makes your skin look more radiant, makes the appearance of fine lines disappear and stimulates cellular renewal. I like Biore myself but you need to find the best one that will work for you and there are plenty out there from 7.99 at your local drugstore to the 100.00 spent on department store brands. Try to get a sample-although I must admit department stores are giving less out these days- before investing your hard earned money on a product that may be to harsh for your skin, remember we want to slough off dead skin and not strip the flesh off your face.
Moisturize from inside and out. A great moisturizer is Olay products and Cliniques Even Better moisturizer it has sunscreen included an spf of 20- however I still recommend after moisturizing to apply a topical sunscreen with spf of 50.
Now remember to clean out that old makeup bag, throw out that mascara that is older than three months. Most makeup should be replaced every three or four months lipsticks some experts say once a year is good, you need to be the judge. Wash brushes and sponges at least once after every other use.
And now for the hard part lets get active, find time to exercise at least an hour a day. It doesn’t need to be structured but it needs to involve vigorous moving, walk, jog, run, dance, do old fashioned calisthenics, play with the kids, play with the dog, play with your man; because spring is coming even if the ground outside your door is covered with snow and ice, and winds are gusting up of 60mph and dead birds that fell from the sky line your lawn.
